Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover (January 18, 2022). Bestselling romance author Colleen Hoover returns with this story about Kenna, a woman who’s been in prison for five years and goes back home trying to reunite with her 4-year-old daughter. The siblings could find their way back to each other, and to their mom, with this family history.

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City #2) by Sarah J. Maas (February 15, 2022). You can always count on the prolific Sarah J. Maas to keep delivering 700-plus-page volumes every year. Gwendy’s Final Task by Stephen King (February 15, 2022). And while we’re talking about prolific authors, let’s mention one of the most illustrious ones. Master of horror — and of posting cute photos of his doggie on Twitter — Stephen King proves once again in 2022 how much of a non-procrastinator he is. In his new novel, Gwendy is a novelist and rising political star confronted by her past. At 12, a stranger gave her a mysterious box. Broke and alone, Jess asks her half-brother Ben if she could crash at his place for a bit. But when she gets to his Paris apartment, not only is Ben not there, but the place seems way nicer than what he could have afforded. With her brother missing, Jess starts questioning what may have happened and tries to find answers among the building’s neighbors.

Gallant by V.E. Schwab (March 1, 2022). After the bestselling success of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue , V.E./Victoria Schwab returns with another fantasy proposal good for adults and YA audiences alike. In Gallant , Olivia only has her mother’s journal as a memento of her past. When she’s invited to Gallant, she feels at home there, even if no one was expecting her and half-formed ghouls are haunting the place. She wants to uncover what secrets the place holds.

The Recovery Agent by Janet Evanovich (March 22, 2022). After the success of the Stephanie Plum and Wicked series, bestselling author Janet Evanovich launches a promising new series. But when she’s forced to work for her own family, Gabriela ends up in the jungles of Peru looking for the Ring of Solomon and the lost treasure of Cortez. The main problem is that her ex-husband, Rafer, is the one who has the map that could take her to the treasure.

Time Is a Mother by Ocean Vuong (April 5, 2022). She copes with her mother and grandmother’s constant arguments by finding friendship in Simone, her next-door neighbor, and Jade, the daughter of the town’s prominent family. The Return

In the romantic tradition of  Dear John , #1  New York Times  bestselling author Nicholas Sparks returns with the story of an injured Navy doctor and a beautiful deputy, whose secrets will change the course of his life .

Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, NC. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked as an orthopedic surgeon sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any.

Tending to his grandfather’s beloved bee hives while gearing up for a second stint in medical school, Trevor isn’t prepared to fall in love with a local . . . and yet, from their very first encounter, his connection with Natalie Masterson can’t be ignored. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she’s hiding.

Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road from his grandfather’s cabin. Claiming to be 19, she works at the local sundries store and keeps to herself. When he discovers she was once befriended by his grandfather, Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather’s death, but she offers few clues — until a crisis triggers a race that will uncover the true nature of Callie’s past, one more intertwined with the elderly man’s passing than Trevor could ever have anticipated.

In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie’s secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began.

Hilary Mantel's posthumous sales

Author Hilary Mante l's novel " Wolf Hall ," (Picador, 640 pp.) which won the Booker Prize in 2009, returns to the list at No. 53 only a week after the author's death at age 70. The novel was the first book of an award-winning trilogy that also included the Booker Prize-winning “ Bring Up the Bodies ” in 2012 and 2020's final installment, “ The Mirror and the Light ,” which was longlisted for the prize. All three novels were USA TODAY bestsellers spending a total of 45 weeks on the list.

“I’m very keen on the idea that a historical novel should be written pointing forward,” she told The Associated Press in 2009 when discussing "Wolf Hall." “Remember that the people you are following didn’t know the end of their own story. So they were going forward day by day, pushed and jostled by circumstances, doing the best they could, but walking in the dark, essentially.”

If you're a reader who loves uplifting romantic novels, you've probably read a few Nicholas Sparks books. Sparks has written over 20 novels in his career, all of which have been best-sellers. He's sold more than 105 million books worldwide, and 11 of his novels have been turned into films.

Sparks was born on December 31, 1965. He is a native of Nebraska, though he has lived most of his adult life in North Carolina, where his books are set. He began writing in college, during which time he produced two novels. Neither was ever published, however, and Sparks worked a number of different jobs in his first years after graduating from Notre Dame.

Sparks' first book, published in 1990, was a nonfiction book co-written with Billy Mills called Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding . Sales were modest, though, and Sparks continued to support himself by working as a pharmaceutical salesman in the early '90s. It was during this period that he was inspired to write his first novel, The Notebook . It was completed in just six weeks.

He secured a literary agent in 1995, and The Notebook was quickly picked up by Time Warner Book Group. The publisher clearly liked what they read—they gave Sparks a $1 million advance. Published in October 1996, The Notebook rocketed to the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for a year.

Now, Nicholas Sparks has written over 20 books, including A Walk to Remember (1999), Dear John (2006), and The Choice (2016), all of which have been adapted for the big screen. Read on to learn more about each of Nicholas Sparks' novels.

1996: The Notebook

the latest book by nicholas sparks

The Notebook is a story within a story. It follows the elderly Noah Calhoun as he reads a story to his wife, who lies bedridden in a nursing home. Reading from a faded notebook, he recounts the story of a couple who are separated by World War II and then passionately reunite years later. As the plot unfolds, Noah reveals that the story he is telling is of himself and his wife, Allie. It is a tale of love, loss, and rediscovery for both young and old.

In 2004, The Notebook was made into a popular movie starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands.

1998: Message in a Bottle

After The Notebook came Message in a Bottle . It follows Theresa Osborne, a divorced mother who finds a love letter in a bottle on the beach. The letter was written by a man named Garrett to a woman named Annie. Theresa becomes determined to track down Garrett, who wrote the note to express his undying love for the woman he lost. Theresa searches for answers to the mystery and their lives come together.

Nine years before publishing Message in a Bottle , Spark's mother died in a tragic horseback riding accident. He has said that the novel was inspired by his father's grief.

1999: A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember follows the story of middle-aged Landon Carter as he recounts his senior year in high school. Carter, the class president, cannot find a date for his senior prom. After poring through the yearbook, he decides to ask out Jamie Sullivan, a minister's daughter. Although they are two very different people, something clicks and a romance develops between the two—but that romance is cut short when Jamie learns she has leukemia.

The novel was inspired by Sparks' sister, who would die of cancer just eight months after its publication. This book was made into a movie starring Mandy Moore as Jamie and Shane West as Landon.

2000: The Rescue

The Rescue follows single mom Denise Holton and her disabled four-year-old son, Kyle. After moving to a new town, Denise is in a car accident and is rescued by Taylor McAden, a volunteer firefighter. Kyle, however, is missing. As Taylor and Denise begin to search for the boy, they grow closer, and Taylor must confront his own past romantic failures.

2001: A Bend in the Road

A Bend in the Road is a love story between a police officer and a school teacher. The police officer, Miles, lost his wife in a hit-and-run accident, with the driver remaining unknown. He is raising his son alone and Sarah, newly divorced, is his teacher.

This story was inspired by what Sparks and his brother-in-law experienced as Sparks' sister was undergoing treatment for cancer.

2002: Nights in Rodanthe

Nights in Rodanthe follows Adrienne Willis, a woman who is tending a friend's inn for the weekend in order to escape problems in her life. While there, her only guest is Paul Flanner, a man going through his own crisis of conscience. After a romantic weekend, Adrienne and Paul realize they must leave one another and return to their own lives.

Thes novel was made into a movie starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere.

2003: The Guardian

The Guardian follows a young widow named Julie Barenson and her Great Dane puppy, Singer, who was a gift from her husband given shortly before he died. After being single for a few years, Julie meets two men, Richard Franklin and Mark Harris, and develops strong feelings for both. As the plot unfolds, Julie must confront deceptions and jealous emotions, relying on Singer for strength.

2004: The Wedding

The Wedding is the sequel to The Notebook . It focuses on Allie and Noah Calhoun's oldest daughter, Jane, and her husband, Wilson, as they approach their 30th wedding anniversary. Jane and Wilson's daughter asks if she can have her wedding on their anniversary, and Wilson works hard to please his daughter and make up for years of neglect of his wife.

2005: At First Sight

At First Sight is the sequel to True Believer . Having fallen in love, Jeremy Marsh is now engaged to Lexie Darnell, and the two have settled down in Boone Creek, North Carolina. But their domestic bliss is interrupted when he receives a number of unsettling emails from a mysterious sender that threaten their happy future together.

2006: Dear John

Dear John is a love story about an army sergeant, John, who falls in love shortly before 9/11. After the tragedy, he is inspired to re-enlist, leaving Savannah behind. John returns home to find his true love married, which he must come to terms with.

The book was made into a movie starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

2007: The Choice

The Choice is about Travis Parker, a bachelor enjoying his comfortable single life. But after Gabby Holland moves in next door, Travis becomes smitten with her—even though she already has a longtime boyfriend. As a relationship develops, the pair must confront what true love really means.

They fall in love, but a secret in Logan's past may destroy them.

The Lucky One was made into a movie starring Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, and Blythe Danner.

2009: The Last Song

In The Last Song , Veronica Miller's parents divorce and her dad moves from New York City to Wilmington, North Caroline. As a result, she becomes angry and estranged from both of them. Two years after the divorce, Veronica's mother decides that she wants her to spend the whole summer with her father in Wilmington.

This Sparks book was also made into a movie. The 2010 feature starred Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth.

2010: Safe Haven

2011: The Best of Me

The Best of Me tells the story of Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole, two high school sweethearts who are reunited when they return home for a mentor's funeral. As they proceed to honor their mentor's last wishes, Amanda and Dawson rekindle their romance.

This Sparks book was made into a movie starring James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Luke Bracy, and Liana Liberato.

2013: The Longest Ride

The Longest Ride moves between two stories—an old widower named Ira Levinson and a young college girl named Sophia Danko. After surviving a car crash, Ira is visited by a vision of his dead wife, Ruth. Sophia, meanwhile, meets and falls for a cowboy named Luke. As the plot advances, Ira's and Sophia's lives intertwine in unseen ways.

2015: See Me

See Me follows Colin, a young man with anger issues who has been thrown out of his home by his cold and distant parents. Colin soon encounters Maria, a woman whose loving home environment could not be more different than Colin's. As the two slowly fall in love, Maria begins receiving anonymous messages that could wreck her romance.

2016: Two by Two

Two by Two follows Russell Green, a 32-year-old man who appears to have his life on track with a beautiful wife and adoring young daughter. But Green's life is soon upended when his wife decides to leave him and their child behind in pursuit of a new career. Green must quickly adapt to life as a single father while learning to rely on others to help him get by. As with all Sparks novels, there's a romance, too, as Russell reconnects with a former girlfriend and sparks fly.

2018: Every Breath

Published in 2018, Every Breath follows Hope Anderson, a 36-year-old woman in a long-term relationship that may be going nowhere, and Tru Walls, a Zimbabwean who travels to Sunset Beach, North Carolina with the hoping of learning about his late mother. The two strangers cross paths and fall in love, but family duties may get in the way of their happiness.

2020: The Return

The Return centers on Trevor Benson, a Navy doctor who is sent home after an injury. He returns to his North Carolina hometown and starts fixing up the home he inherited from his late grandfather. Along the way, he falls for Natalie, a deputy sheriff, and discovers that Callie, the teenage girl down the road, may know something about his grandfather's mysterious death.

2021: The Wish

The Wish tells the story of Maggie Dawes, a travel photographer facing a potentially devastating diagnosis. One holiday season, she begins to tell her assistant the story of her past. When she was sixteen, she was sent to live with an aunt in a remote North Carolina village, where she fell in love for the first time.

‘Hold on to Dreamland

Forever, not just today

Someday Dreamland will be ours

Hold fast, don’t fall away’

Famous around the globe for his bestselling books and films based on his novels, Nicholas Sparks presents his readers with Dreamland , his latest release. Two worlds collide in this engaging new Sparks tale, holding the reader completely captive with this risky love and life story.

Dreamland unveils the lives of two core protagonists in this poignant new journey tale from Nicholas Sparks. We meet Colby, a man who has big dreams of making it in the music world, but family pressures and obligations have got in the way of his career goals. But out of the blue, Colby agrees to take part in a gig that will change his life forever. Colby’s temporary dalliance in the music world leads him into the arms of Morgan, a star on the rise. Morgan soon inspires Colby to reignite his passion for music and she encourages him to take a chance on a new life with her.  As Colby and Morgan forge an unforgettable bond, Beverly is a woman on a drastic journey. Escaping her violent husband and protecting her young son from his abuse, Beverly must forge a new undercover existence in a town where no one knows her name. With the constant threat of her husband finding out where she and her son are hiding, Beverly lives on the edge. Will Beverly find her safe haven? How will the lives of these three souls intertwine as their dreams collide with their past ?

Nicholas Sparks is one of my unquestionable auto buy authors. Although Dreamland was published in September, I reserved this latest Sparks release for the Christmas period. It is always a book treat to read a Nicholas Sparks novel and I’m happy to report that this was another fine read by the global bestselling author.

Told over seven page turning parts and sixty-eight engrossing chapters, Dreamland is the twenty fourth release from Nicholas Sparks, an author who needs no introduction. Utilising an alternating form of narration between a man named Colby and a woman named Beverly, Sparks presents two vastly different viewpoints. It is hard to see how and when Sparks will make the character linkage, but I placed my complete trust in one of my favourite writers. Eventually I was presented with a huge collision between the lives of Colby and Beverly. I loved how Sparks managed to bring these two contrasted protagonists together in a crushing turn of events. Poignant, sad, full of meaning and sacrifice, Dreamland was a moving read. I found most of the novel addictive and it really ramped up towards the last third of the story. I couldn’t turn the pages of Dreamland quick enough in the latter addictive stages of the novel.

Dreamland features a very immersive narrative style which allowed me to develop a lasting bond with Beverly. I was less enamoured by Colby and Morgan’s story, but they were still well rendered protagonists. I was itching to get back to Beverly’s journey each time Sparks made the switch back to Colby. I’m not sure why I found Colby’s story and romance plot less attractive. Beverly’s story had me riveted, as it featured some crime and mystery vibes. I was reminded of the movie Sleeping with the Enemy while following Beverly’s tense story. Sparks really involves the reader in Beverly’s narrative, so we feel an overwhelming sense of urgency, despair, nervousness and fear. Tying in themes of grief, loss, health, mental illness, parenting, family care and domestic violence, Sparks illuminates some rather heavy ground within the format of a highly accessible contemporary narrative. With periphery ideas on music, careers, love and hope, Dreamland is a bittersweet tale.

Do have a few tissues on hand as in true Sparks style this double story is both happy and sad, but Dreamland will leave your heart full.

Dreamland by Nicholas Sparks is published by Hachette Australia on September 27th 2022. $34.99.

North Carolina's Nicholas Sparks talks his new book 'Dreamland'

sparks.jpg

Author Nicholas Sparks has written 23 novels, and all of them have been on the New York Times Best Sellers list, with more than 115 million copies sold worldwide. His career as a writer began in 1994 when he was working in pharmaceutical sales and wrote a novel on the side. It was titled "The Notebook."

That novel quickly made the New York Times Best Seller list when it was released in 1996 and was later turned into a movie like many of Sparks' subsequent novels. Sparks, who's lived in New Bern, North Carolina, for 30 years, has a new book out this month, "Dreamland." It's an emotional love story between two young musicians of different backgrounds and is set in North Carolina, like all of his novels, and on a Florida beach. Sparks says the inspiration for "Dreamland" came from a personal experience.

Nicholas Sparks: When I met my wife years ago, we were down on the west coast of Florida for a week. You know, I had met her and I knew by the end of that first week that she was going to be the one for me. And so we got married, had five kids, and all that stuff. Didn't last in the long run, but it was wonderful while it did. And at the same time, the really big thing I really wanted to do was to kind of illustrate the parallels between making music and falling in love.

You have these two people, Colby and Morgan, and they just meet on the beach and they're young people and okay, you know, this could just say "hello" or it could be a fling. And they discover that they share this passion for creating music and it was both part of their dreams. And as they begin to get to know each other and fall in love, they also fall into the songwriting process. And I just really wanted to explore those parallels — that hitting the right note when you're meeting someone and you're falling for them, it just feels like a song, right?

Gwendolyn Glenn: She seemed to have more aggressiveness about, "this is what I'm going to do," but he's a little hesitant.

Sparks: This was something that she has trained for and worked with tutors for and went to college for. Then you have someone who, loved music, but kind of started doing something else in life, right? Something that he was very good at is working the family farm.

Glenn: Yeah. And he doesn't realize how good he is until he takes that chance to go to Florida for several weeks and to gig down there and the crowds just love him.

Sparks: Sometimes that happens. You know, I've been to those kinds of places when I'm on vacation, a little beachside this or that. And, you know, I've heard some extraordinary voices.

Glenn: Yeah. So the other side of the story is in North Carolina, where we have these other incredible characters that you bring to life.

Sparks: You know, the interesting thing about "Dreamland" is that you have this wonderful love story that's taking place in Florida and then another story, and you just don't know how it's related at all. It's a woman who's fleeing with her child from what she feels is a very dangerous situation.

And the reader, as they're going through, they're reading the one story and then the other, and they don't necessarily know how they're going to come together. And that's one of the things I try to do, is to write a novel that will surprise a reader in the end in a way they don't expect.

Glenn: And this character also lost his parents. So this is not just about love between two people in that kind of relationship, but it's also about love for family and loss.

Sparks: Yeah, those are themes that I often — they mean a lot to me, family. And in my own life, I've lost my mother, I lost my father, both when I was in my 20s. I lost my younger sister not long after that — I was, I don't know, 32 or 33. And yet without my family, I don't know who I would have been.

And so I love to explore the concept of family love. It's a different kind of love. And when I pray, I basically, I just — I thank God for all of those different loves. And I love to explore that theme in my books. And I think that by the time you get to the end of "Dreamland," you know, you really realize love in all its many varied forms.

Glenn: And I read where you once said, and I think it was on NPR with Scott Simon, that you like to explore human — all human emotions in your books. And this particular one took on a lot of emotions, as you just talked about.

Sparks: Well, for me, the stories that mean the most are those that touch all of the emotions of life. Because the more you touch all of the emotions of life, the more it feels as if it could be happening to you. To me, it's a way to draw you closer to the character.

So yeah, I'll write about love, but I'll write about, for instance, fear. You know, in this novel, I'll write about uncertainty. I'll write about confusion. I'll write about happiness, right? Just laughter. And you try to cover all of that. And I think by bringing in the entirety of the human experience, the characters feel more real. And thus the story lingers longer in the memory once the final page is turned.

Glenn: A lot of your books have been turned into movies and TV series. Do you see this as one?

Sparks: Yeah, I do. Universal bought this book, among others.

Glenn: Well, you had one, "Safe Haven." You were the executive producer. I was going to ask you, how much input do you have when they're turned into movies and television?

Sparks: I am one of the major voices in the room. Unlike a novel where I'm the boss. But in a film, you're dealing with the studio executive in charge of the production. You have the director, who has a specific vision. Sometimes members of the cast have significant input. For instance, in "Message in a Bottle" when I'm working with Kevin Costner, Kevin Costner has an opinion and it's important to listen to that because it's Kevin Costner, right?"

Sparks: I have 11 different films, so that could be on Amazon, Netflix. They could be anywhere. And they're often on network TV.

Glenn: When you're thinking of stories, are you thinking in terms of this has to work for North Carolina because there are so many different plots or things, but they might not necessarily work for North Carolina?

Sparks: So yeah, you do pick and choose some things like that. But I tend to select stories that I can write in North Carolina. I've lived there for so long and I'm just a small-town guy. I guess through my novels I'm trying to tell you a little bit of the charms I find in small town life — the geography, the slowness of pace, the opportunity to be able to quiet one's soul for a little while and thus allowing yourself to be open to, perhaps, new experiences.

Author and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks' new book is "Dreamland." He will be in Charlotte on Monday for a 4 p.m. book signing at Barnes and Noble Arboretum.

WFAE's weekly arts and entertainment email newsletter, Tapestry, will keep you in the loop on arts and culture in the Charlotte region.
