What Is Content Writing?
Content writing is the process of planning and writing web content that is used for some type of digital marketing purposes. Content writing is used as a tool for building an emotional connection with your audience. It often aims to spike brand engagement and customer loyalty. Typically, content writers produce texts for blog posts and articles. They also write scripts for videos and podcasts and other types of content that suit the needs of specific platforms such as Reddit, Twitter, or other social media platforms.
Today, content sets the foundation of your company’s online presence. There is immense value in choosing the right topics and formats for content writing. This, along with quality content, can help businesses achieve their marketing and communication goals. Many people view content writing as just blogging or writing topic-related articles. To give you an idea of the outreach of content writing, here are some of the different content formats:
- Social media posts
- Video scripts
- Podcast titles
- Email newsletters
- Landing pages
- White papers and eBooks
- YouTube video descriptions
- Web page copy
DID YOU KNOW: Content marketing is popular because it gets you more traffic and leads, helping to promote your services. To determine what type of content suits your business needs, you can take a look at these content marketing statistics.
Content writing spans different genres. Here are the types of content writing that you are most likely to come across, as well as their overall purpose:
1.SEO Writing
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the most common types of writing and makes up an integral part of most digital marketing strategies. SEO content writers produce texts that include specific topic-related keywords that help web pages rank as high as possible in the search engine result pages.
2. Technical Writing
Technical writing includes writing well-researched, in-depth technical descriptions and instructions on topics such as finance, robotics, or engineering.
Different technical writers bring forward different content writing skills; some might be better at presenting material to beginners, while others write for an expert audience.
3. Copywriting
Copywriting aims to tell a given product’s or brand’s story and present it in an attractive way that will increase customer interest. Some of the common duties of copywriters include writing press releases for new products, composing infographics, and writing short texts or titles for landing pages and sales pages that will catch readers’ attention.
4. Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing is crucial to a business’s social media presence. Companies hire content writers to manage their social media platforms and produce copy that will speak to their audience. Unlike SEO content writing, social media content writing does not revolve around keywords. Instead, it aims to grow brand awareness by providing readers with catchy, entertaining writing.
To measure brand awareness and see how customers are responding to their product or service, business owners carry out different metric surveys.
5. Email Marketing
Email marketing is a type of content creation that targets only specific audiences. It can be seen as a niche of content writing as it requires plenty of research and the ability to easily capture people’s attention.
One of the best content writing tips for future email marketers is to develop a good understanding of lead generation strategy and psychology. Additionally, here are some popular content marketing strategies that brands use to up their content game.
6. Script Writing for Video Content
This type of script writing is quite different from theater or movie script writing; it revolves solely around creating digital advertising content. These content writers usually produce scripts for podcasts, advertisements, and instructional videos. Motion graphic scripts, audio advertisements, and chatbot texts are also among the content writing examples which are produced by script content writers.
7. Ghostwriting
Ghostwriting is writing content without taking any credit for your writing. Ghostwriters often specialize in a specific niche and get hired by an organization or an individual to compensate for the lack of skill within the staff. Usually, they take on the white papers and eBooks that teams were not able to produce during the year.
8. Long-form Content
This is a broad category of content writing as it includes evergreen content, case studies, white papers, and eBooks. Long-form content writers prefer lengthy formats and usually specialize in niche topics. These individuals often become subject experts and provide analysis on the topics within their expertise.
When learning about the content writing basics many people are surprised to find that the content writing process focuses largely on preparation and research. This means that much of the work happens before you start writing.
Here are some of the aspects of the work content writers engage in:
Research and Planning
One of the most important things in content writing is presenting the audience with factual, verified information. Before doing so, you must identify your audience’s interests and needs and target the right keywords.
Your research and planning process will probably look as follows:
- Identify goals
- Find your consumer/client persona
- Target content writing keywords
- Develop a content strategy (choose your content writing formats and publishing channels)
- Create an outline of your content and visualize
- Research your topic
- Set up a content calendar to track progress
Writing and Editing
When you’re done planning your writing process, it is time for action. Here is how content writers approach their work:
- Picking an angle to make your writing stand out
- Luring readers in with the introduction
- Making the content easier to consume by introducing relevant visuals
- Engaging readers with calls-to-action
- Writing a meta description
- Self-editing
Publishing and Review
The final phase in the content writing process includes publishing and reviewing your materials. Once you share your writing with the audience it becomes part of your official content writing portfolio. It is crucial that you pick the right channels for publishing your content. Depending on your goals, you can do so through social media platforms, blogs, industry hubs, websites, and so on.
The process doesn’t end here, however. Monitoring how the audience responds to your content can help you learn and improve your craft. You can use SEO tools such as the Semrush toolkit to optimize your content and strengthen your online presence. Learn more about Semrush features in our full review.
There are some specific qualities and skills that this profession requires. Here are a few ideas that will help you acquire them:
1.Read Good Content
The best way to learn the dos and don’ts of content writing is by reading a lot of various articles. As content writing is by definition a process of research, you can start by searching for topics online and taking a look at both the best and worst-ranked content. While doing so you can take note of the writing styles that speak to you and bookmark them so you can examine them later.
2. Get Training
The best way to improve your writing skills is to get training. You can sign up for an online content writing course or a digital marketing certification program. This can be a good way to build connections, too, as many of them collaborate with big-name companies.
3. Build a Portfolio
Content writing examples of your work can be very helpful when building your portfolio, which you will need when applying for a position as a content writer. Another thing to remember is to diversify your skills as much as possible and engage with different topics especially if you plan on working as a freelance writer.
Good writing is more than just jotting down the information you gather. The aim of content writing is to cause the reader to act and share your work or buy the product/service that you’re writing about.
We’ve put together some tips on how to write engaging content as a beginner:
Write for the Readers
No matter how big or small your content writing portfolio is, content is valuable only when it appeals to the reader’s interests. Besides answering questions and describing the products, you should always include industry-related topics.
Pay Attention to Readability
Use the active voice and keep your sentences as clear and concise as possible. Make your paragraphs easier to read by using line spacing, subheadings, numbered lists, and bullet structure in your formats. Readers are more likely to skim and share your work if it is well-structured.
Focus on Keywords
One of the content writing basics is that search engines place great importance on keywords. These are usually phrases and sequences of different words that people are likely to use when searching for information on a given topic.
Avoid fluff in your writing and use words associated with the product or service you are describing.
Write Killer Titles
When it comes to titles, Google recommends you make them short, preferably no longer than 60 characters. A good title captures the reader’s attention and makes them want to discover more about the topic.

Content marketing is a critical process for ALL digital marketing campaigns. It’s not an exaggeration to say that all other channels like SEO, social media marketing, and email marketing depend on content marketing.

For sure good skills to acquire and hone as a modern creator. I went through that whole myself; courses, videos, tutorials, articles.
It takes time. Energy. Effort. But it’s all worth it because you can use these skills in pretty much any job out there.
If you’re a marketer, you suddenly get much more leverage when you can craft your own digital assets.
If you’re a freelancer, you can expand on your product offering by learning a new subset of content creation skills, like animation, for example.
If you’re a YouTuber, you can boost your reach if you’re able to repurpose your videos into articles, podcasts, etc. And write a strong SEO description too.
I’ve built an 8-week academy that teaches my “digital generalist” skill set. And the reason why is that this skill set is so broadly applicable.
Thanks for a strong list, and take care!

Head of Marketing, Coursedekho.com New Delhi
At IIM SKILLS, I learned that Content Writing and Content Marketing are two sides of the same coin. I was blissfully unaware of how things work on the digital medium, the dos and don’ts of writing online.
One of the things that worked great for me at IIM SKILLS is the fact that I am from a city with not many institutes offering a content writing course. Yet, the online approach allowed me to take up the best course in the country.
Also, I learned a great deal about SEO from the trainer, Mr. Vaibhav Kakkar, who has an ocean of knowledge about how things work online. Learning from the experts always helps. I admit, building a website did sound very intimidating, but again, the adept Mr. Vaibhav Kakkar helps you sail through the process with the utmost ease.

In your personal life, writing allows you to keep in touch with friends and family members via texts, social media posts, or traditional letters.

What are typical careers that use writing?
Writing is an essential skill if you want to pursue a career in a field such as copywriting, journalism, technical writing, or scriptwriting. Copywriters use their writing to persuade audiences to try a service, buy a product, or participate in an event. Journalists write about current events, and their work can help people make informed daily decisions. Technical writers break down complex processes into more concise and easy-to-understand text. Scriptwriters, novelists, and poets produce artistic works that entertain, inspire, and inform audiences. Artistic works can also challenge viewers to explore a new perspective.
Many other career paths are also writing-intensive. For example, public relations specialists need to constantly communicate with the press and public in media releases, and scientific researchers often have to record and share their findings in academic papers.

Content Writing
- Content Production
What Is Content Writing?
Content writing is the process of planning, writing and editing web content, typically for digital marketing purposes. It can include writing blog posts and articles, scripts for videos and podcasts, as well as content for specific platforms, such as tweetstorms on Twitter or text posts on Reddit.
Why Is Proper Content Writing Important?
When most people hear “content writing”, they think “writing articles”.
However, writing content isn’t just important for blog posts.
In fact, content writing is important for all types of different content formats, including:
- Video scripts
- Email newsletters
- Keynote speeches
- Social media posts
- Podcast titles
- White papers
- Web page copy
- Landing pages
- YouTube video descriptions
Or put another way:
Writing is the foundation for pretty much any content that you publish.
Best Practices
Create an outline.
Creating an outline is a GREAT first step in the content writing process.
Outlines help your content come out better for two main reasons:
First , outlines force you to put all your thoughts down in an organized way (rather than writing everything off the top of your head). Which really speeds up the writing process.
Second , outlines usually lead to a much better structure for your content. That’s because an outline lets you see your content from a “high level” that’s impossible to see as you’re writing.
Plus, because you have an outline, your final content will hit all of the major points that you set out to before you started writing.
So: how do you actually go about creating an effective outline?
Here are three main strategies that work well:

So when we start working on a new guide, we use a lot of the structure from our existing guides as a base.
- Use a template: Most professional content writers work off of proven templates. Here are 5 content templates you can use to create outlines .
For example, let’s say you’re about to write a guest post about the keto diet.
Well, you’d want to type “keto diet” into BuzzSumo to see what’s already done well.

Make It Easy to Consume and Share
Content that’s super easy to read and share is of the keys to great content .
You can have a post written by the world’s top copywriter. But if that post is hard for people to consume, no one will read it.
Here are a few tips to help make your content easier to consume, skim and share.
Keep it Snappy, Rich and Entertaining
Whether you’re writing about content creation or cars, your writing needs to grab (and keep) people’s attention .
Otherwise, they’ll click over to something else.
How you grab someone’s attention depends on the format you’re working with.
When I create videos, I use “Family Guy moments” throughout the video. These are little asides that add some humor to and spice to my video content.

And when I write videos, I focus a lot on formatting and layout.
Specifically, I try to keep my paragraphs short:

I also sprinkle in visuals and screenshots to mix things up.

And if you’re about to sit down and record some audio, you want your lines to be short and snappy. You also want to avoid parenthetical statements. Content in parenthesis is easy to follow when you’re reading it. But you can easily “lose the thread” if you’re listening to your audio as a podcast.
In short: your final content needs to be super engaging to work. And no matter what format you’re working with, that starts with the content writing process.
Quotable On Social Media
According to a study that we conducted, very few blog posts get shared or linked to .
And to increase the odds that your content ranks in search engines and gets shared on social media, add shareable quotes.
For text-based content, this can be a statement that you highlight in your post.

And if you’re making a YouTube video, you can pull out a short snippet from that video to share on LinkedIn.

The important thing here is to have these quotes ready before you publish the post. Then, highlight them in your content.
Choose Interesting Angles
With 2.3 million blog posts going live every day , you can’t just publish something generic and expect a wave of visitors.
Instead, to get traffic to your content, it needs a compelling angle.
An angle is simply the hook that makes your content stand out from all the others on that topic.
Your angle can be a personal story. A bit of controversy. Or something that simply looks better than what’s out there.
The angle you go with depends on your target audience.
For example, when we published our guide to becoming an SEO expert , our 8-bit design helped it stand out.

Make It Actionable
For most niches, your content can’t just be entertaining.
And it’s not even enough for it to simply be informative.
For your content marketing to work, your content needs to be super useful .
Here’s how:
Our SEO audit post is a great example of this.

- Keep it up-to-date: A single outdated step or example can derail an otherwise great piece. I recommend going back and updating your old content at least once a year.
Make it Trustworthy
For people to share and link to your content, they need to trust it first.
And while design factors in to how much people trust your content , your writing plays a big role too.
Here are a few tips to make your content more trustworthy.
- Use proper grammar: If you want to improve your writing skills, a tool like Hemingway Editor or Grammarly can be a huge help.
For example, whenever we write a guide, we add lots of stats and references.

Here’s an example from our blog.

Give it a Magnetic Headline and Introduction

Maintaining the uniqueness of the content: If you want to be a successful writer, your work should stand out . Otherwise, it( content) will be like a drop in the ocean of flooding content.
How to Overcome these challenges
Establish a writing routine.
Set up a place for writing, make sure you write every day in the very same place. This becomes a sort of routine like everyday habits like eating or bathing. Whether you write perfect or imperfect, go ahead and write daily.
Freewriting is a writing strategy like brainstorming but written in paragraphs continuously. It increases the free flow of ideas and fluency of writing skills.
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a method to generate ideas without interruption. Write down the ideas as keywords without skipping anything. After the process just connects those keywords and delete unnecessary words.
Idea Mapping

Eliminate distractions
Delete social media and all possible distractions, focus on writing. Let your family know about the routine and the nature of your work. Time management is vital, so set a timetable.
Develop Writing goals
Practice makes perfect, the more you write, the better writer you become. Set daily writing goals, aim for a specific word count each day. Work continuously and don’t take frequent breaks as it tends to disrupt the flow.
Develop your Vocabulary
More often it is not the lack of idea s but the lack of vocabulary which adds to the writer’s block. Let your vocabulary blossom, learn 10 words every day, and use them in your conversation. ‘Reading maketh a full man’

What is Content Writing? 10 Essentials for Killer Content Creation
by Jessica Glendinning
on Sep 7, 2021
If you’re looking for tried and true techniques to ensure your content writing efforts don’t fall flat, this engaging post lays out the fundamentals of great content creation.
Ever read a piece of content that left you with all the feels? Or ready to jump out of your seat and take action right this instant?
You might believe that powerful writing is a product of luck. Or that great writers just have a gift .
But I’m here today to bust those myths and show you how to add that special sauce to your writing.
Ready to craft content so remarkable you’ll leave your readers with a lump in their throat?
In this post we’ll examine:
- What a content writer does,
- Ten content writing tips to take your writing from good to great, and
- Answer the question, “What skills does a content writer need?”
Before we begin, let’s define our terms.

What is Content Writing?
The term “content writing” covers everything that goes into planning, writing, editing, and publishing written digital content.
It might include blog articles (like the one you’re reading now), video or podcast scripts, social media posts, ebooks, white papers, press releases, web pages, and the like.
Let’s contrast:
- A copywriter focuses on producing persuasive writing (copywriting) that aims to sell.
- A freelance content writer creates web content that educates the reader and helps them fall in love with your company or brand.
Ready to compose killer content?
Let’s dive in.
10 Tips for Crafting Quality Content
Let’s break down the tips that’ll help you learn how to write content that slays .
1. Understand That Content Is Not King

Every other post out there will tell you that “content is king.”
But move over, content. There’s a new ruler in town, and her name is Empathy.
One of the best ways to help your readers fall in love is to put yourself in their shoes.
One of my favorite examples of developing audience empathy comes from this Copyblogger “confession” post by Smart Blogger’s own Writer Extraordinaire and Badass Visionary, Jon Morrow:
Imagine two women, lying in bed. One can’t sleep because she is worried about her teenage daughter. It’s 2 AM, and she still hasn’t come home. Mom knows it’s probably just normal teenage rebelliousness, but she can’t stop the horrific images going through her head.
It’s the 2 am test: Know what keeps your readers awake at night.
When you know your target audience on a deep level, it helps you create high-quality content that:
- Speaks to their desires, goals, fears, and frustrations, and
- Makes them wonder if you can secretly read their minds.
Figure out where your readers congregate online. Talk to them, read their posts and comments, and take notes about the exact phrases they use to describe their dreams and challenges.
Then you can write blog content that hits ‘em right in the feels.
2. Write Like a Chameleon
Much like some chameleon species can change skin color to match their surroundings, great content matches the place it’s published.
Before you start writing, think about your content goals. Who’s the intended audience? What style of content is best for that combination of audience and outcome?
For example, let’s compare how content writing for social media varies across platforms:
- LinkedIn is a professional site, so you should write your content for a primarily business audience.
- Facebook content can be less polished and more personal.
- Twitter forces you to think in bite-sized ideas with their 280-character limit.
- Instagram is highly image-focused, but a good caption will help your posts stand out from the crowd.

Research your competitors. Pay attention to the headlines they use. Look for patterns in the types of visual media they include. And examine their writing structure.
Then use that information to write better content.
3. Stick Out Like a Sore Thumb
Spend much time on the internet? Then you probably know quality content isn’t the norm.
Instead of churning out another boring, crappy, or otherwise inferior piece of written content, consider how you can stand out from the crowd:
- Make your reader the center of attention. Think about what topic angle would interest them the most. Add details that will spark emotion. And show them the benefits of taking action.
- Write original content based on a personal experience. This will allow you to write in a distinctive voice and from a unique perspective. Chances are, at least a few of your audience members will be able to put themselves in your shoes.
- Persuade with powerful prose . Remove the fluff , add power words , and use metaphors to entertain and delight your readers.
One content writing example that uses a powerful personal story is Jon’s On Mothers, Dying, and Fighting for Your Ideas :
Growing up, I always had to fight to get people to listen to me. The worst part about being disabled isn’t the pain or the struggle but how the world tries to shove you into a corner and pretend that you don’t exist. After all, what could you possibly have to contribute? You’re going to die soon, poor thing. Here’s a nice, quiet room and some morphine to ease the pain. They don’t proactively hold you back, no, but they don’t expect you to succeed either. I’ve spent my entire life fighting against the weight of those expectations.
Get your creative juices flowing with these creative writing exercises .
4. Give Google What it Wants
In the early Internet days, getting your content in front of the right eyeballs was easy. Write a post, publish, and readers would show up.
But this technique stopped working as more and more writers showed up and started publishing every thought that crossed their minds.
Instead, make friends with Google for good content marketing results.
That means understanding search engine optimization (SEO) basics :
- Primary, secondary, and related keywords — aim for a combination of low competition and high search volume
- Searcher intent — make sure your reader leaves happy
- Content length and format — readers searching for short videos won’t read a massive ultimate guide, and vice versa
- On-page optimization — ensure that both Google and your readers have a good search experience

Marketers and writers looking to deepen their knowledge of SEO content should check out Brian Dean’s SEO resource list and a beginner’s guide to SEO from Ahrefs .
5. Don’t Fly By the Seat of Your Pants
Setting out on your writing journey with nothing more than a vague idea of where you want to go can be a fun way to write a short story or explore a new idea.
But if you want your content marketing strategy to connect with readers and help you reach your goals, planning is the way to go.
A good content strategy will incorporate the SEO tips above with a content brief that ensures everyone is on the same page.
What’s in a content brief? A good one will include a lot of specific detail about how to make the piece great, including a brief explanation of searcher intent, key insights and takeaways, and an article outline.
In an ideal world, the content brief also includes one possible headline, a list of keywords and relevant terms, the recommended word count, and a list of the ranking competitors and their post URLs.

To learn more about crafting a solid content brief, listen to this podcast from the Smart Blogger team .
6. Map Out The Reader’s Journey
Do your competitor research before drafting the complete outline. Reading through the top-ranking posts for the primary keyword will help you understand how to write a better article.
This research process allows you to gather your main points, fill in any gaps, and add new insights (if possible). Then create your article outline, using your subheads as stepping stones to guide your reader.
Finally, brainstorm other potential headlines . To persuade readers to click through:
- Use power words ,
- Show the reader how they’ll benefit,
- Use click-through-rate (CTR) boosters like numbers, percentages, or parentheses, and
- Be clear, not clever.
Jon is a master of writing great headlines like this one:

And with enough outlines under your belt, create a content writing template to make your process faster.
7. Punch Your Reader in the Feels
By now, you hopefully understand how much research and preparation goes into writing a killer piece of content.
The good news is writing the post itself should go a lot faster because of all your prep work!
Start by hooking your reader from the very beginning – a strong intro catches their eye and quickly reassures them they’re in the right place.
Then you can weave your reader into the story, using sweater-knit copy (meaning: no fluff) to tell a compelling story .
For example:
It’s not about how smart you are. It’s not about the professionalism of your blog design. It’s not even about giving readers tips they can go out and apply immediately. It’s about how you make those readers feel. You want them to cry. You want them to laugh out loud. You want them to shake with anger. But the most important part? You want them to feel alive.
Use examples that will emotionally resonate with the middle 80% of your readers, focusing on thoughts, feelings, and experiences they identify with.
Wrap up with a persuasive conclusion that ties back to the introduction.
A compelling conclusion:
- Reminds them where they started,
- Shows them the way forward, and/or
- Gives them a glimpse of the future.
Be clear with your call to action (CTA), so it’s obvious what action they should take next.
8. Write for Humans, Not Robots
Remember back in tip #4 where I told you to write for Google? Now it’s time to add nuance.
The best way to write content that ranks is to write for humans first and then tweak for Google.
Pay attention to the grade level of your writing . Explain things simply and don’t use a lot of buzzwords or complicated explanations.
Use proper article formatting and sentence structure. Short paragraphs and formatting like bolded text and pull quotes will help break up your text.
Be sure to include:
- Engaging and relevant images and videos
- Quotes from experts
- Short “sound bites” for social media sharing
- Internal linking and external high-authority links
And then edit. Edit. And edit again .

Finally, you can make small SEO adjustments:
- Write a meta description
- Use keywords in relevant tags
- Place secondary keywords and related terms where possible, including in subheads
With a completed post in hand, you might think you’re done. But not so fast!
9. Make Friends With Technology
There are still some writers who think of technology as the enemy. AI is coming for our jobs! (But not so fast. Have you seen the writing quality robots produce? )
The best writers take content writing courses to improve their knowledge. And they use technology and tools to make their lives easier.

Great article, Jessica! As a freelance content writer who receives briefs (hopefully good ones!) – do you think it’s a reasonable for a client to ask a content writer to come up with things like keywords, or would that be more the role of a content strategist, or an SEO?
Hey Megan! This ia a great question. In an ideal situation, the client will provide as much of the content brief as possible. However, that’s rarely the case. But, at a bare minimum, it’s best if a content strategist, SEO specialist, or someone with a good grasp of what results the company wants to get from their SEO strategy is the one to provide the keywords!
What an outstanding, practical guide for content writers! I really appreciate all the links and resources as well, Jessica. Thank you! The link for this one is in my files because I know I will be checking in repeatedly on some of these concepts.
Thanks so much, Christy! That’s quite the compliment coming from you, and I’m so glad that the article was helpful. It’s always fun to have a resource list that you can go back to again and again.
This was a great read! I love how-tos with a short list.
You had me at “Every other post out there will tell you that “content is king.” But move over, content. There’s a new ruler in town, and her name is Empathy.” <3
Thanks, Dori! Empathy has been such a huge part of what I’ve learned from working with Jon and the Smart Blogger team. It makes writing much more compelling… and has the added benefit of helping your readers reach their dreams and desires!
Great article @Jessica! Definitely agree about using technology to boost your work rather than looking at it as a threat. Also adapting the style to different channels 👌.
Thanks, David! There’s some great tech out there, and we can either fight it or use it to our advantage. Thanks for commenting!
Oooo I like this!

7. Email Writer
The purpose of an email writer's copy is to drive action. They are well-versed in lead generation strategies and how content may help such efforts. Psychology plays a significant role in their creative process. They create and put every word in headlines and call-to-action phrases, taking buyer stages and sales initiatives into account. A professional email writer is adamant about A/B testing text and will constantly examine and adjust their writing to attain the best conversion outcomes.
An Email Writer creates:
- Newsletters
- Transactional Emails
- Drip Campaigns
- Customer Nurturing
- Sales Nurturing
8. Scriptwriter
A scriptwriter is an essential component of multimedia ventures. They bring storytelling expertise while remaining committed to the messaging approach. Scriptwriters envision how words on a page will eventually convert to more rich formats, such as videos and podcasts.
You'll know you've found the appropriate scriptwriter when they can see the big picture of your content vision from the beginning.
A Scriptwriter is a creative resource for:
- Video Scripts
- Podcast Scripts
- Explainer Video Scripts
- Radio/Audio Advertising
- Motion Graphics Scripts
9. Long-form Content Writer
A long-form content writer is a cross between a novelist and a marathon runner. Long-form content writers frequently become subject matter experts by default due to their enthusiasm for analytics and knowledge.
While many writers are intimidated by 2,000+ words, long-form content writers favor longer formats since they can incorporate insights into a cohesive and robust framework.
A Long-Form Content Writer creates:
- Data Studies
- Case Studies
- Pillar Blog Entries
10. Ad and Promo Writer
An ad and promo writer understands how to maximize prime real estate with any material they create. Within character count constraints, powerful messages are readily generated.

An Ad and Promo Writer would work best for:
- Advertising Text
- Landing Pages
- Direct Mail Copy

- Sales Material

How to Become a Content Writer?
When you combine skills, such as content writing, with a specialized niche, you will become an excellent content writer. It might be a very appealing proposal because you now have subject matter expertise and technical skill related to this subject area. The following steps are what you need to know about how to become a content writer:
Step 1: Create a Portfolio
After choosing an industry or specialty, brainstorm content ideas, develop content for that industry, and create a few blog pieces, an ebook, or a case study. A strong portfolio will provide you with a solid foundation to expand. But it alone will not help you.
You require social proof !
Step 2: Begin Generating Social Proof
You can use this as a content writer to produce your own social proof. Quora is an excellent place to do this. Quora not only allows you to flex your content writing muscles, but it also attracts the required social proof and demonstrates how people are not just consuming but also engaging with your information.
Step 3: Establish Authority by Blogging
Now you can attract more clients and convert them at a much higher price if you establish a sense of authority and knowledge. A blog is a simple way to accomplish this. It will use your blog to demonstrate your expertise and management. It is a reasonably easy way to set up a blog, and there are numerous sites online that will show you how.
Step 4: Develop a Pitch
A great pitch is straightforward, to the point, and articulate. These are the components of a practical angle:
- A clear, personalized topic line
- Address the recipient by name
- Mention where you found their requirement (or why you think they need content)
- Explain why you believe you are a good fit for the provision or company
- Examples of your work and portfolio
- Links to your blog and other social media outlets (like Quora, Upwork, etc.)
- Links to your social media accounts
- An effective email signature
And keep in mind that the treasures are in the follow-ups. Remember to follow up after you pitch.
Step 5: Start on Websites for Freelancers
Fiverr and Upwork, the online marketplaces for freelance services, have led the writing gig economy. Many of you may say that it is saturated, but we believe there are still a lot of opportunities on these platforms. Giving out free labor in exchange for evaluations is a simple method to gain success on Fiverr and Upwork. You can also choose to use these content pieces to build your portfolio, so it's a win-win situation. Once you've accumulated a certain number of reviews, you'll have a better chance of landing assignments on these sites.
Step 6: Create Your Linkedin Profile
A LinkedIn account is the key if you want to be a part of the literary gig economy. The first and most obvious step is to create a complete profile with all relevant information.
After that, it's time to optimize your profile. LinkedIn is also a search engine, so make sure you show up when organizations look for people with specific skill sets. To accomplish this, ensure that keywords are included in both the title and the description.

Step 7: Apply to Firms That Have Openings
Keep an eye out for organizations seeking full-time content writers on job boards. It also includes digital marketing and advertising firms. They're almost always on the lookout for writers. Even if they have full-time writers, agency life is unpredictable, and you never know when your need will expand overnight. So, contact the appropriate individual at these organizations and pitch your services to them.
Step 8: Participate in Content Platforms
You won't be able to choose your clients here, but it's the perfect place to begin if you're starting out. There are other alternative venues, but their payments are lesser. In any case, it's absolutely worth a go.
Skills Required to Become a Content Writer
Usefulness is a critical concept to grasp because wannabe writers either approach content writing as a technique to appease search engines or become scared because they believe they must be innovative. Both ways are incorrect because simply inserting keywords adds little value to our audience, and content writing is usually more about usefulness than creativity.
Clarity is what you should strive for while producing material. When you have clarity, you will be able to explain it lucidly, which is far more appealing than trying to sound clever and full of jargon.
Each of us has these skills, which can only improve through practice and consistency. Just as any muscle in your body can be conditioned and improved over time, so are your writing skills.
Copywriting vs. Content Writing
The purpose of the content on the internet is to motivate, inspire, convince, or persuade people on the internet. Content does this through either educating, informing, entertaining, or selling to this group.
Copywriting and content writing differ from each other in their purpose.
Copywriting focuses on selling a product or service. Meanwhile, content writing focuses on entertaining or educating.
Content Writing Tools
Here are some tools writers use to elevate their writing. Do note, though, that these tools will make good writing better. It will not make lousy writing look good.
- SEMRush Writing assistant: For writing SEO-friendly content.
- Grammarly: A powerful software that helps improve spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Readable: To ensure that your content is readable to all readers.
- Hemmingway Editor: Hemmingway is a simple tool highlighting how your content can improve.
- Copyscape: To ensure your content is free of plagiarism.

Here are some excellent content platforms:

Remember, there is a reasonable amount of content on the internet. Everybody needs content, be it board games, food, sports, or current events.
Challenges of Being a Content Writer
As with any other profession, content writers face their own challenges. However, good content writers overcome these and make steady headway in their respective careers. Here are a few challenges that you may face as a content writer:
Creative Fatigue
The pressure of constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to portray your content may prove taxing for many. As a result, content writers may often feel like they have reached the limits of their creativity. This Is not true. However, it is simply mental fatigue from the rigors of the invention.
Writer’s Block
On rare occasions, writers can experience what's called writer's block. A simple analogy to this is those rare occasions when you can't find the right word you're looking for. Writers may experience this when writing too much too quickly.
Early Grind
The content writer profile requires a lot of grind during the initial phase. As you start, you will be working for meager pay since this is one of the most accessible profiles on the job market. Career progression will also gradually happen as you prove your mettle as an artist with words.

Best Online Writing Courses: 18 Top Options (2023)
Discover the best online writing courses to help you take your career and craft to the next level.
I spent a year taking a traditional in-person writing class. We covered topics like writing short stories and personal essays. It was fun to meet other writers, but a conventional writing class involves traveling to a location at a set time each week. It’s often hard to do this with a job and family commitments.
New and experienced writers can choose from a plethora of online writing classes. You can learn a specific topic related to the craft at your own pace. No matter what you write, write books, articles, blog posts, and so on, there’s an online writing course for you.
Online writing courses provide valuable lessons for new and established writers. No matter your skill level, you can continually improve and build new skills with the help of industry experts. Some of my most valuable skills have been gained from online classes.
Using online writing courses can open up opportunities to further your career. This could include launching your online blog with articles, publishing your non-fiction or fiction book, beginning a copywriting career, or delving into journalism. Whatever your passion is, online courses are a great way to develop your skills and start your next adventure.
Learn from the world's best teachers and instructors about writing, business, creative pursuits and more. It's affordable and includes dozens of hours of high-quality lessons that you can't get anywhere else.

Establish Your Goals for an Online Writing Course
The first step towards improving your writing skills is to understand online writing classes vary widely in price, content, and theme. Before picking a class, decide what part of the writing process you want to learn more about and your budget.
Before spending money on a course, it’s a good idea to reflect on what you write, who it’s for, and your ideal learning goal. For example, a non-fiction writer probably has different creative goals than a novelist. The former may want more clients, whereas the latter may be interested in world-building. So here are several questions to ask yourself before handing over your credit card details:
- Are you a new writer looking for something to inspire you to start writing?
- Do you need help with writer’s block?
- Are you trying to hone your writing style?
- Would you like to write your first book?
- Or perhaps you want to pen and publish a personal essay?
- Do you need help with novel writing?
- Do you want to increase revenue by self-publishing your book on Amazon?
- Are you a freelance writer who wants to develop better business writing skills?
- Would you like to improve your brand storytelling skills?
- Or do you want to hone everyday writing skills, like self-editing ?
- Do you need help launching and marketing a potential best-seller?
Online writing courses exist for all types of creative and business pursuits! These courses can help you improve several aspects of your writing skills. Some of these classes are available today, whereas others only open their doors several times a year.
Set Your Course Budget
Next, you must determine how much you are willing to invest in a course. For example, if you are new to online learning, you might want to try free online courses like Brandon Sanderson’s lectures for genre fiction writers.
You can check out affordable courses like Udemy or The Successful Writers’s Club. Then, once you have covered the absolute basics of the writing format through free online courses – step up to a more advanced paid class like Masterclass.
Remember, set your budget for what you can afford now and what is suited to your skill set. You can always note down interesting courses and add them to your wishlist to revisit at a later time. It is better to start small and build up to more comprehensive courses than pay for something above your skill level out of pocket.

I teach new writers how to share their stories, make an impact and get paid to write. CreativeLive is an exciting alternative to Masterclass. Rather than featuring celebrity writers and authors, many of CreativeLive instructors are entrepreneurs, bloggers, and online personalities.
Having taken several of these classes, I found them more practical than Masterclass offers. However, if Masterclass provides the theory, CreativeLive provides the steps you must take to succeed at blogging or book writing.
Click here to read my detailed CreativeLive review .
These writing classes are recorded in a live studio by instructors teaching or presenting to other writers. It’s an exciting way to learn because you can see the audience’s reactions and get ideas from their questions for the writing instructors.

Run by screenwriter, author, and creative instructor Robert McKee, Storylogue is one of the lesser-known online writing classes available today. It’s based on what McKee teaches in person and his excellent book Storynomics.
Robert McKee’s in-person workshops cost several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on where and when you take them. However, the online writing class Storylogue distills what McKee knows about storytelling, emphasizing screenwriting and business writing. These lessons typically involve McKee speaking straight to the camera from his office.
The materials aren’t as well-organized as those in a Masterclass or CreativeLive. I had to use the search feature to find suitable lessons. They’ve updated the user interface since I was a member. The slight emphasis on screenwriting may also deter some writers.
Instructor(s): Robert McKee is an author, lecturer, and story consultant. He consulted on business storytelling for companies like Microsoft, Nike, Hewlett-Packard, Time Warner, and Siemens. I attended Robert McKee’s in-person business writing class several years ago in Kerry. He was an engaging and inspiring instructor. Recommended for: This course is suitable for screenwriters, content marketers , and anyone who wants to improve their storytelling skills.
Pricing: You get access to all lessons for $19.97 (paid monthly) or $197 (paid annually).

Writer’s Village University is a popular online writing class and community aimed at fiction writers. The emphasis here is on the community. So consider Writer’s Village University, an online version of your local creative writing group. It’s been around since 1995, too, making it the oldest writing class in this review. I joined for two months out of curiosity, even though I don’t write much fiction.
The website contains an active forum. There are over 200 different short classes you can take at your pace. They cover topics like writing poetry, crafting thrillers, essay writing , and more. There’s less emphasis on video learning than in other classes featured in this review. Instead, you receive a series of writing assignments via email.
You can then submit your homework assignments to your online writing tutor and other students to the workshop. I joined this website for three months before moving on. That said, it struck me as a valuable resource for fiction writers who hunger for a community.
Instructor(s): It is a community of writers.
Course Schedule: Click here for more upcoming courses.
Recommended for: These courses are suitable for fiction writers who want the support of other writers.

Both of these courses are taught by bestselling author Mark Dawson, a noted indie author from the United Kingdom. He’s also an expert in book marketing through paid advertising.

Dawson’s second course, Ads for Authors , will help you sell more copies of your book. He explains how to use various ads to sell your books, including Facebook, YouTube, and Amazon ads. In 2016 and early 2017, I struggled to earn a profit from selling my books on Amazon. But, thanks to Dawson’s second course, I learned how to run profitable Amazon ads, making me an excellent monthly return on my books.

In 2016, Brandon Sanderson recorded a course focused on writing fantasy books. Then, he uploaded these classes and published them as a YouTube playlist . Now, you can take Sanderson’s curriculum online in the same sequence as his students.
I don’t write fantasy stories (at least, not anymore), but I watched nearly a dozen of Sanderson’s writing classes. I was fascinated to hear him describe his world-building techniques and genre fiction writing.
Some of the classes are hard to follow because of background noise. Also, the classes were typically between 30 and 60 minutes long, and it took me a long time to go through them. Still, Sanderson’s classes are free and an excellent introduction to learning online for aspiring fiction authors.
Instructor(s): Brandon Sanderson is a famous American fiction author specializing in fantasy. Notable works of his include the Mistborn series and his conclusion to the Wheel of Time series.
Course Schedule: You can watch all of his videos at your leisure.
Recommended for: These lectures are a great introduction to online writing courses. It is suitable for fiction writers (specifically fantasy).

I’ve written and published dozens of articles for newspapers, magazines, and online publications, including Forbes and Lifehacker. I’m also a best-selling non-fiction author, a trained journalist, and a copywriter.
I’ve spent thousands of dollars taking writing courses in college and online. I consider writing courses a crucial part of my development as a writer. I also sometimes commission other writers to review these courses to get another point of view.
What other online writing classes would you like me to feature in this review? How do you plan to develop your English writing skills? Please let me know in the comments section below.
Please note the cost of some of these writing classes varies depending on when they are launched.
Do creative writing courses help?
Creative writing courses help if you complete the course and also write and share your short stories or pieces. In addition, it helps if you can take a course alongside other students and an experienced teacher.
Are writing-intensive courses hard?
If you haven’t written much before, they can be a challenge as you’ll have to cultivate a regular writing habit and adapt to getting feedback from other writers, even if it’s negative.
Are writing courses worth it?
They are if you pick a course from a reputable instructor that solves a particular problem. For example, I took a book marketing course that doubled my book sales and earnings over time.

Why do I seem to hate everything I write/unable to just put my ideas out

Here's the thing. I've been writing since I was 13, mostly fanfiction and short stories, which of course were not exactly high quality content. Now I'm 20 and while I feel like my skills have developed and my opinions on all matters have drastically changed, I'm finding it really hard to write this story that I have in mind.
Just a few nights ago I had a rush of inspiration and I sat down and spent 5 hours typing on Scrivener. I had multiple ideas that I liked and I managed to pretty much get 80% of the first chapter finished.
Now, today, as I was editing—English is not my first language so I have a habit of nitpicking and searching for all possible mistakes—I realized I hate everything about it. The more I read it, the more flawed it seems to me. Like I'm not using the right words, like I'm info dropping too hard, the characters suck or the plot is lazy. You could think of a million reasons why I hate this group of sentences I WROTE. And given the fact that I don't have anyone to check it out and give me feedback, I'm pretty much the one that has to determine if it works or not.
And it's funny, because when I was 16 I managed to write my first full novel, and I remembered how I felt back then: I connected with the story and was able to write everyday for about 8 months until it was finished. And I loved it. I can't seem to do that now.
Has anyone else gone through this? Loving your work one day and realizing that if you put it out it would be embarrassing the next? Why does this happen and how do you deal with it?
I'm sorry if this seems bitchy but I'm literally on the verge of tears out of frustration. I'm frustrated with myself for not knowing what to do to do a decent job at writing and contributing to my wish of becoming an author, so I need someone else's input.

Yes. This is completely normal. The best way to get over this is to join a critique group. Get used to forcing yourself to put your work out there for feedback from other writers. Also, giving others feedback on their work will teach you what to look for in your own work when you're self-editing. As you refine and hone your craft, you'll build confidence and hopefully get to a point where you are confident enough to consider attempting to get something published.
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste.
"But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.
A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this.
"And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.
"And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
― Ira Glass
The reason you were able to write at 16 without holding yourself back was because your enthusiasm exceeded your taste.
This can have a looping effect, because as you get more critical of your own work, you'll start trying to raise the bar, and you'll see how you still aren't meeting it.
I don't read Big Blocks of text. Not like this. It's almost the same thing every single time.
Just write.
Read later as an editor. For the second draft. Fix things there. Don't do it while you're writing.
It's like staring in the mirror wondering why you just started exercising and you still got that belly flab.
Writing doesn't happen that way. It doesn't happen overnight. You got to let it work. Finnish your project, beginning to the end, and then take a closer look.
I have written some things I hate but most of what I dont share is unfinished.
I have a 30K word WIP that I would never share. It's not done. I need to write another 30K words and then work in everything I left out and it's a lot. It may take 5 ot 6 passes before I would show it to anyone. So, an unfinished work to me, is nothing to brag about.
